What a COSHH assessment covers
- The substance — product, supplier and SDS revision date
- The hazards — signal word, hazard statements and pictograms (SDS section 2)
- How it's used — task, location, method, quantity and frequency
- Who could be exposed and how — breathing in, skin, eyes, swallowing
- Controls — in order, with PPE last (SDS section 8 for PPE detail)
- Storage, first aid, spills and disposal — SDS sections 7, 4, 6 and 13
- Health surveillance — where the substance can cause asthma, dermatitis or long-term disease
- Review — when the SDS changes, the work changes or after an incident
Common construction examples
Sealants and PU adhesives (often skin and respiratory sensitisers), coil cleaners (often corrosive), refrigerants (gas under pressure, some flammable), cement and mortar (skin burns), solvent-based paints, and dust from cutting concrete, brick or timber. The generator includes ready-made starting points for silica dust, wood dust, welding fume, solder fume, paint mist, diesel exhaust and insulation fibres.
Questions
- What is a COSHH assessment?
- An assessment under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 of how a hazardous substance is used at work, who could be harmed and how, and the controls in place. It covers substances generated by work — dust and fumes — as well as products with a Safety Data Sheet.
- Do I need a COSHH assessment for every product?
- You need to assess the risks from hazardous substances your work involves. Products that aren't classified as hazardous usually need little more than following the supplier's instructions. HSE's COSHH guidance explains the approach.
- Can I just attach the Safety Data Sheet?
- An SDS is an important input but isn't your COSHH assessment. The assessment adds how your team actually uses the substance and the controls you'll use.
- Which controls come first?
- Remove or substitute the substance if you can, then change the process, use ventilation or extraction and safe systems of work. HSE advises not to automatically opt for PPE.
