Mechanical & electrical RAMS
Create a site-specific combined M&E RAMS online. Describe the job, review suggested risks and method steps, and download a professional PDF.
Typical scope
- Plantroom installs
- Riser services
- Ceiling coordination
- Pressure testing
- Cable management
- Commissioning support
Combined M&E RAMS only work when isolations and permit boundaries are crystal clear between disciplines.
Quick answer
An M&E RAMS covers multi-trade mechanical and electrical packages — isolations, pressure testing, work in risers/ceilings, lifting of plant, and commissioning interfaces on a named project.
Primary topic: mechanical electrical method statement. UK contractors — review every document before you issue it. SafeForJob does not replace competent judgement or HSE guidance.
What usually goes wrong
These are the operational gaps that make generic Word RAMS fail on the next site.
Who isolates what
Unclear boundaries between mech and elec.
Live systems nearby
Permits and LO/TO discipline.
Ceiling congestion
Coordination and access equipment.
Example
Plantroom AHU replacement
Built from one job description. You review and adjust every item before issuing it.
Job description
Replace AHU-2 in basement plantroom at City Labs. Crane through hatch, electrical and controls isolation by electrician, mechanical pipework drain-down, confined space permit for tank room adjacent.
Activities identified
- General site work
- Electrical isolation
- Manual handling
- Lifting operations
- Confined space
- Plumbing and heating systems
Method (14 steps)
- 1.Arrive and sign in. Arrive at City Labs basement plantroom, report to the City Labs FM site contact, sign in and complete any site induction.
- 2.Brief the team. Brief all operatives on this RAMS, the COSHH assessments and the emergency arrangements. Record attendance.
- 3.Isolate the electrical supply. Identify the relevant circuit, isolate, lock off and tag. Prove dead with an approved voltage indicator, proved before and after use.
- 4.Isolate and drain down. Isolate the water/heating supply, allow to cool and drain down the affected section. Confirm isolation before breaking into pipework.
- 5.Confined space permit and gas test. Obtain the permit to work, test the atmosphere and confirm rescue arrangements before anyone enters.
- 6.Carry out the lift. Carry out lifts to the lift plan, with the exclusion zone in place and a trained slinger/signaller directing.
- 7.Disconnect and remove existing equipment. Disconnect and remove the existing equipment. Lower or carry it using mechanical aids or team lifts as planned.
- 8.Install new equipment. Position and fix the new equipment to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 9.Install pipework. Install and connect pipework. Use press-fit or mechanical joints in place of hot works where possible.
- 10.Carry out electrical work. Carry out the electrical work on the isolated circuit to BS 7671.
- 11.Test and commission. Test and commission the installation. Record results.
- 12.Remove isolation and re-energise. Confirm the work is complete and everyone is clear, remove locks and re-energise.
- 13.Clear up and remove waste. Clear the work area, remove waste from site (including recovered refrigerant and hazardous waste) and leave the area safe.
- 14.Hand over and sign out. Hand over to the City Labs FM site contact, report anything outstanding and sign out.
Main risks (6 in total)
Electric shock or burns
Residual MediumWho: Operatives, building occupants
- Work carried out dead — no live working
- Safe isolation: isolate, lock off, tag, and prove dead with an approved voltage indicator (GS38) proved before and after
- Only competent, qualified electricians carry out electrical work
- Permit to work obtained where the site requires one
- Personal locks and keys retained by the person working
Manual handling
Residual MediumWho: Operatives
- Use mechanical aids (trolleys, sack trucks, hoists) for heavy items
- Team lifts for items too heavy or awkward for one person
- Route planned and cleared before moving items
- Operatives trained in safe lifting techniques
- Gloves with good grip and safety footwear
Lifting operations
Residual MediumWho: Operatives, public, other trades
- Lift planned by a competent person; lift plan in place
- Lifting equipment and accessories have current LOLER thorough examination
- Exclusion zone below the lift; nobody under suspended loads
- Trained slinger/signaller directs the lift
- Lifts stopped in high winds
Confined space
Residual MediumWho: Operatives, rescuers
- Avoid entry — do the work from outside where possible
- Permit to work and confined space trained operatives
- Atmosphere tested before and during entry with a calibrated gas monitor
- Emergency rescue arrangements in place before entry
+ 2 more risks in the full RAMS.
What to get right on this document
Isolation matrix
Define systems, responsible trade, prove-dead/prove-safe.
Permits
Hot works, confine, electrical as applicable.
Commissioning
Partial energisation controls.

What good looks like on a UK site
Combined M&E RAMS only work when isolations and permit boundaries are crystal clear between disciplines. Name the site, the people at risk, and the sequence that keeps them safe. Generic paragraphs that could apply anywhere are the first thing a principal contractor rejects.
How SafeForJob helps
- Describe the job in plain English and get suggested activities, risks and method steps
- Edit every line before you download or issue
- Reuse a previous RAMS and catch old client or site names
- Attach or create COSHH assessments where hazardous substances appear
What this page is not
This page is not HSE approval, legal advice or a substitute for competent judgement. It helps you draft a clearer mechanical electrical method statement document for a named job. You remain responsible for reviewing and issuing it.
